The NEC code (336-15) directs that the staple not “damage” the sheathing (how the heck is “damage” defined?). 7 Oct 2016 its a long run of 12-2 romex. i was stapling the wires to the rafter when one of the staples twisted just before my hammer tapped it to start setting it.

I use small romex staples for one cable on older homes where the joists are like iron. Our rule of thumb was always one wire per staple and two wires max side by side. if you need to put more than two wires use what we call stack it's. only one wire under each staple. When Romex is run across rafters in an open, unfinished attic it is my position that a raceway of some kind (1x3’s or even 2x4’s) should first be attached across the affected rafters, perhaps 3’ to 4’ above the joists, then the wiring be stapled to the raceway. I have used one staple to hold down two Romex cables and used a zip tie to stack one or two more on top.

I have been called for more then 1 romex under a slandered staple 1/2 by 11/8". If you read the GB bow it does state 2 conductors well there are 2 conductors in a 12-2 or 14-2 romex. The inspector made us get GB ms-XL staples witch are 1/2 by 1 3/4". They allow 2 to 4 CABLES not conductors.
